Rainbow Beach #1
Now for post-fellowship exam life!
We spent the Queens Birthday long weekend at RainbowBeach which is just 2 1/2 - 3 hours from Brisbane, near Fraser Island.
Unfortunately it rained cats and dogs on Saturday and so the only place we ventured out to was the IGA supermarket.

We had an early start on Sunday, catching the 7:20am dolphin ferry across to Tin Can Bay. This little fishing hamlet is a favourite spot for boaties and fishermen. It is frequented by abundant wildlife such as dugongs, turtles and manta rays but is especially famous for its wild dolphins which may be fed in the mornings. A was very excited at the prospect of feeding a dolphin but when it was his turn, he just threw his little fish at the dolphin and said he wasn't going any closer! Afterwards, we were both very cold and wet (we were both inappropriately dressed - I forgot that we had to wade into the water).
Following a short (sleep) break at our apartment for V, we set out for Carlo Sandblow.

This unique natural attraction is a HUGE (16 ha - whatever that is in metric) crater-like
sandmass overlooking magnificant coloured sandcliffs (Coloured Sands) ie. this sandmass does not lead down to the beach but rather stops at a set of towering sandcliffs. It is a great place to go hangliding and also watch migrating whales later on in the year.
A and V thought it was just the biggest sandpit ever and simply had a ball. A built a sandcastle while V walked/crawled/ate sand.

Later that afternoon, we visited Rainbow Beach whose beauty, I think, is somewhat marred by the fact it is legally used as a highway for 4 wheel vehicles - at low tide, you can drive on the beach all the way to Noosa (40 minutes).

Sunset at Inskip Point (where the dolphin ferry and barge to Fraser Island leaves) provided more great photo opportunities as we walked on the large sandbar.
Sunday was spent at a more leisurely pace as we dropped by Tin Can Bay again for lunch before heading home.
It was a lovely long weekend which has left A pestering us to go on more holidays!
