Out of the Box Festival 2006

This weekend A was treated to some fun activities as part of Out of the Box. This week long festival is a biennial celebration of the arts for children aged 3-8 held at The Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Encompassing a diverse programme including theatre, story telling, dance, music, film making, drawing and craft, it certainly is a wonderful cultural event for kids.

On Saturday, A went to a dance workshop where he was taught some breakdancing (Mummy's mistake - at the time I didn't know that I was enrolling him in a breakdancing workshop!!). With the loud thumping music, Mummy and Daddy were itching to get up and bust a move, but unfortunately the session was a bit beyond little A who was probably the youngest in the group. He was taught how to strike a mug (said with an American accent) and stance, as well as some cool dance steps. However, his favourite was freestyling it with the studio converted into a disco, complete with disco ball and strobe lighting.

After that, A and I enjoyed a wonderful theatre adaptation of Mem Fox's The Green Sheep - one of our all time favourites! The audience was seated on cushions on the floor in the middle of what was made to look like a fenced paddock while the delightful sheep characters came to life around us. So simple, yet so captivating. A just loved it!
On Sunday, A took part in Foodart, a cooking workshop. Taking instructions from the Head Chef, the children made their own pizza and decorated their own biscuits which they later got to eat. Parents were not allowed to help!Kitted out in his hat and apron, using his utensils, answering the Head Chef's questions, little A was just adorable. T and I really enjoyed this workshop and it certainly got the thumbs up from A!
A fantastic weekend - two years is way too long until the next Out of the Box Festival!
